H&M Skirts for Men Hit The Mainstream

Men's Skirt from H&M

For decades, men who like skirts and suchlike have been complaining that there are no fetching skirts on the market for men. H&M have changed all that with their Spring 2010 collection that includes skirts and hosiery for men. That's right, skirts and hosiery for men. The fashion revolution continues to roll along, how many of you will take up the gauntlet thrown down by H&M and their ilk and vote with your dollars, purchasing these skirts for men and showing manufacturers and the world that yes, men do want skirts.

In the past, (the past being early 2009,) edgy fashion designers brought out skirt for men, I've covered them here, but the long story short is that Yves Saint Laurent, Jean-Paul Gautier and Alexander McQueen all brought out skirts for men in their collections and now mainstream fashion house H&M has followed suit. From Spring 2010, men will be able to walk into an H&M and buy a skirt designed just for them. That's pretty major, but how successful this move will be, and whether men's skirts turn out to be a fad or something more long lived will largely depend on how much men embrace this additional freedom that they have been given.

It's heartening to see that the fashion industry is welcoming and incorporating the trend towards skirts and unbifurcated pants for men, though its nothing particularly new. Men have been wearing skirts as long as men have had legs, pants are a relatively recent invention, and not one that should be seen as being definitively masculine anymore than skirts should be seen as being definitively feminine.

Historical precedent has not stopped the little minds of modern fashion bloggers being blown by this move. Yahoo's Shine blogger whined “Not only has H&M decided men would look good in pleated skirts come spring, they think they’re best paired with tights and a shirt with a dream catcher on it. Are there any words? Because we can’t find them.”

It's sad that women who think they are into fashion are unable to comprehend when fashion moves outside the narrow boundaries they've set for themselves inside their pretty little heads. No offense ladies, but if you want to consider yourselves fashion gurus, then you need to take a broader view of fashion, not just the last two decades in which you could legally be considered to have been sentient. Fashion isn't just your little screamy idea of what's in and what isn't in, its an expression of style and comfort that transcends trends.
