A very talented team of Minecrafters made a to scale representation of the Planet Earth. Yes they did. Using images from NASA and some pretty impressive mathematical know how, they managed to create a Minecraft World Save File that is 3.5 G in size. Fortunately it's only a 35 MB download and you can download it and play it yourself.

Obviously this is more awesome than awesome can be. I'd say several multiplayer severs will be implementing this map just as soon as 1.6 allows them to and there's more than one person doing a You Tube Let's Play in which they explore the world. I'm doing much the same thing, except I won't be doing it in You Tube, so you won't have to watch me jump around in circles for three minutes whilst saying 'uhhh' and wondering aloud whether or not I should get some wood.

My technique for world navigation is simple. I won't be using the Minecraft compass, I'll be using the sun and the moon, like the early Minecrafters did. The Read Me file states that you spawn somewhere near Los Angeles. That may be true, that may be not, but I figured that seeing as LA is on the West coast, if I head West I should hit ocean. From there I'll plan my world domination.

My destination at this point is New Zealand. Why? Why not.

The planes mod would probably come in very handy for this exploration, but I'm starting off on foot because it's grittier and there's nothing I love more than grit. Also, you get a very real feeling of what the world might be like if we'd never bothered to build anything on it. (Because this map was generated from images taken from space, it replicates the general land mass, not buildings. It would be awesome to find a pre-rendered version of Los Angeles or Beijing, but I'm pretty sure that if they'd done that the save file would have been closer to 3.5 TB.

Should you download this Minecraft world save file? You should if you have 3.5 G worth of space in your C directory. This map is unique in many respects, mostly because it's not using the usual Minecraft generator that kindly puts all the resources you'll ever need handily in reach. In this map, the plains are vast and often sandy and you can go for hours without seeing water once. The oceans are correspondingly massive of course, which means you better get used to travelling by boat or install that plane mod I was talking about earlier.
