Girl Throws Drink At Guy, Guy Knocks Girl On Her Butt | Gender Equality In 2009
So there's this little video that has been doing the rounds on social networking sites, long story short, girl throws a drink in a guy's face, guy sweeps her legs and dumps her on the ground. It's been greeted with general hilarity because both parties are clearly idiots and nobody actually gets hurt. However, it has inspired great discussion on one of my favorite social networking sites of all time, Reddit, and I thought it would be highly relevant to the interests of my readers as well.
Let's watch this video, then have a chat!
(Would have loved to embed this, but YouTube keeps removing the video, so we're stuck with the Live Leak version which can't be hosted here, so be a dear, pop over and watch it, then come and join us back here :) )
A great deal of posters, male and
female felt that women still feel a sense of entitlement when it
comes to being violent towards the male gender, and believe that it
is okay to slap, hit, or otherwise assault a guy whilst he has no
real recourse. Most of them felt that it was an unfair rule and that although the guy should not have taken the action he did, it was none the less refreshing to see a woman experience some consequences for an aggressive action.
It challenges the old rule of 'men shouldn't hit women,' which is personally never a rule I subscribed to anyway. Fortunately I've never had to hit anyone, male or female, (aside from my younger brother and I who were about the same size and the same age growing up and those fights were always fair and equal and even then actual punching was fairly rare, though stuffing heads under car seats was considered an admissible technique.)
Now in this particular video, racist southern girl from the good ol' US of A is having a wild time down in Mexico when she gets into a fracas with some guy who speaks French. (He's a French Moroccan guy, apparently, and he's unfamiliar with the celebrated tradition of women being able to throw drinks on men.) We don't know what happened before they started their little verbal scrap, but we do hear him call her a bitch and we do see her throw beer in his face (which apparently hurts,) and we then see him walk up to her whilst she squeals 'don't you touch me!' and sweep her onto her ass. The whole time she manages to keep a hold of her sunglasses, which could mean that they are glued to her head and her hand is glued to them, or it could mean that she's a little bit retarded when it comes to her priorities.
Now of course, had this gone wrong it could have gone very wrong. The sweep was risky, she could have hit her silly head on something and killed herself. But the real question here is, was this a gender equal action? If he had swept a guy onto his ass, would anyone care? If yes, why? If no, why? If it is an issue of her being smaller than him, would it matter if it was a little weedy guy who decided to throw beer in a bigger guy's face? Or are women inherently less equal than men and therefore exempt from the consequences of their actions?
Right or wrong, I'm pretty sure Miss USA there won't be throwing a drink at a guy any time soon.
