Minecraft is a creator's game, and many people have created incredibly intricate and beautiful worlds – worlds you wish you could spend some time playing in. Good news everybody! It is possible to play other people's save files. Not only do you get the worlds to play in, but you get the contents of the world, know what I mean? No? Well imagine starting up a minecraft world and finding that not only has some kind soul already built a city for you to knock about in, but they've also been kind enough to leave chests full of goodies in them. Ooh, is that a full set of diamond tools and armor and several stacks of TNT I see there? Goody!
Playing other people's saves is a brilliant way to enjoy their creativity and also inspire your own creations, so I can't recommend it enough. There are a multitude of places to download save files, and I won't go into too many specific places here, but the official Minecraft forums is one place you'll find some impressive saves and so too is reddit.com's /r/minecraft. Save files are usually uploaded by their creators to various free file sharing sites where they can be easily downloaded. It may be worth running a virus scanner when you download some files as sooner or later, some bright spark is sure to toss something into a free save file just for the fun of it. It's what people do.
When you've picked a save file you want to play and downloaded it, installing it is a breeze. Just follow the directions and you'll be inside other people's worlds in no time at all.
How To Install A Minecraft Save File On Windows and Mac
If you're on Windows, you'll need to open up the Minecraft appdata file. This can be easily done by opening up the command line, accessible by Windows+R and then typing %appdata% into the command line. This opens up your appdata file, and minecraft will be in there, labeled .minecraft.
As soon as you open the .minecraft file, you should be able to see a folder labeled 'Saves', open this up and you'll see your saves neatly labeled 'World1' 'World2' and so on and so on. You can put as many saves as you want in this directory, but Minecraft will only acknowledge worlds 1-5. You can easily switch which worlds are available in game by changing the labels on the folder.
If you're on a Mac, your save files are located here: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves/
