Forgotten Temple, Minecraft Adventure Map Download

Updated on August 4, 2011

According to the creator of this map, the wonderful and unmatched Lurler, this is the most well known adventure map, yes, of all time. Maybe it is. Maybe it isn't. All I can tell you is that it was new to me, until I downloaded it and played it and now it's as old as all the rest of them. Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba. That's the Circle of Life right there.

But what you really want to know is whether this map is worth the 562 kb it takes to download. The answer to that question, my fellow minecrafter, is yes. Unreservedly yes.

It opens in game as 'World 4' which I find super retro, and the other thing I like about this map is the fact that it is designed to be played on peaceful. 99.999% of other downloadable maps berate you for not playing on normal or hard, as if we're supposed to enjoy having our skulls munched on by zombies on a regular basis.

The map does tell you not to break blocks, which in Minecraft is a little bit like telling Charlie Chaplin not to wave back to a pretty girl who looks like she's waving to him, but really isn't. Impossible and preposterous. You're also strongly encouraged not to make off with the torches you find in what I have dubbed the 'loading area' and to turn the music off. Presumably so you're not alerted to the massive caverns under your feet. So many rules, so little time.

But what about the actual gameplay. Does one feel adventurous and intrepid? Yes. In the same way one would feel adventurous and intrepid if one went to the jungle but was warned strictly not to hack through any part of it.

The first part of the map appears to be some kind of speed challenge. I'm bad at that sort of thing, so instead of rushing around trying to make sense of things, I spent a minute of my time punching through a metal door. I wish all games were made this way, so that people who are generally inept were able to brute force their way to later content. It would probably destroy gaming as we know it, but what a glorious and content filled end it would be.

There are also musical challenges, which I heartily approve of, and a great searching maze level that made me feel thoroughly claustrophobic, which is testament to the designer's genius. There are also secret areas for anyone intrepid enough to explore outside the box, not to mention very innovative use of minecraft staples like waterfall lifts and minecart activated plates and whatnot, but now I'm just getting into spoiler territory.

All you really need to know is that this is a great adventure world and thoroughly worthy of its popularity. You should make haste to the download page and try your hand against the Forgotten Temple.
