Lorena Bobbit Then...
Lorena Bobbit Now...
Who can forget John Wayne Bobbit, male victim of one of the most infamous domestic violence incidents of the last twenty years
In case you have, here's a quick recap:
On the night of June 23, 1993, John Wayne Bobbit was fast asleep after allegedly engaging in non consensual intercourse with his wife. (He says it was consensual, she disagrees, however he was charged and subsequently acquitted.) Whilst he slept, Lorena Bobbit took a knife to his manhood, severed it from his body and took it for a drive, eventually tossing it into a field.
After coming to her senses, Lorena realized what she had done, called 911 and aided the police in recovering John's member. It was reattached after a six hour operation, Lorena was taken into custody, charged and subsequently found to be mentally incompetent to the point where she was unable to take responsibility for her actions. According to her, she had been subjected to mental, emotional and physical abuse for the duration of her marriage to John Wayne, abuse which went so far as to include a forced abortion. At the end of the trial, she was ordered into 45 day observation and then released.
Where Is John Wayne Bobbit Now?
Two years after the incident, the
couple divorced, and John Wayne went on to attempt to capitalize upon
his traumatic ordeal by becoming an adult film star and then UFC
fighter. Judging by these acts, it would seem that Lorena took more
than his physical manhood that night.
Where Is Lorena Bobbit Now?
Lorena has re partnered and had a daughter with her new partner. She says that she will never marry again. Rather than blatantly generate money out of her ordeal and crime, Lorena has channeled her energies into a charity which helps women who are victims of domestic violence. Lorena's Red Wagon, http://www.lorenasredwagon.com/ is an online resource and contact center for women's groups wishing to engage Lorena as a speaker.
A Stand Against Domestic Violence
Unfortunately, the website states that Lorena took “a stand against domestic violence”, which I would suggest is perhaps not an accurate description of the act of hacking off a part of her husband's body.
Though we may not be able to judge those who endure abuse for extended periods of time and subsequently snap in a fit of violence, we can certainly judge such fits of violence not to be stands against violence. There are many reasons not to glamorize what Lorena Bobbit did that night, most of them fitting into modified clichés, namely:
- An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.
- Fighting fire with fire makes the house burn down.
- Two wrongs, do not make a right.
